SOME children are known to have stopped going to school because their families cannot afford the expenses, according to Hope Worldwide Kuala Lumpur (Hope) programme director Darick Wong.
A total of 142 children from the poor community in Sentul who no longer go to school due to embarrassment of having nothing but worn out uniforms to wear were spared the shame when Hope’s school sponsorship programme got them two pairs of school uniforms, shoes, a bag and stationery.
Sponsor of the event for the past four years, Mydin, also provided lunch for the children and volunteers of Hope at its USJ outlet.

This year, Hope also partnered with Staedtler Malaysia for the programme. They sponsored products and raised funds via its World Kids Colouring Day in May last year.
A mother of two, Zairina was glad to receive the assistance as she earned only RM400 per month, which is not enough to support the family’s daily expenses.
“We have been giving school items to the poor for the past seven years and have helped many stay in school,” Wong said.
Staedtler Malaysia sales and marketing general manager Daniel Lim said they were touched and motivated by the success of the sponsorship. |
