A CAKE, which was 18.3 metres long, was the centrepiece at the New Year countdown at the Mydin Wholesale Hypermarket MITC, here. Chef Soufi Sapiae of Ziq bakery and his crew of six took six-and-a-half hours to bake and put the 300kg cake together. "It is decorated in the colours of the 1Malaysia logo and has seven flavours -- pandan, vanilla, yam, coffee, orange, strawberry and lemon," said Soufi. "The special feature of the cake is the 24 pictures of the nation's leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, past Prime Ministers, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam and state executive council members." Malacca state assembly speaker Datuk Wira Othman Mohamad thanked Mydin for its charitable deeds. Also present were Othman's wife, Datin Wira Halima Baba, state MIC chairman Datuk Perumal Raju and his wife, Datin Sanagi Sinaya, and the hypermarket's manager Sreedran Sankaran.
Many activities and programmes were held from 11am to midnight, including a colouring competition, magic show, clown shows, quiz and games, and cultural dances of all ethnic groups. There was also a performance by the Skill Tech group and Ali Mamak and a special appearance by artiste Najwa Latiff. Mydin gave goodie bags to residents of Seri Kenangan Old Folk Home and students from orphanages. Gift vouchers worth RM100 each and goodie bags were given to 50 poor students.
There were lucky draws for those who were born on Jan 1. Prizes up for grabs included the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung 32-inch Plasma TV, five Samsung mobile phones and three electrical items. Bright, colourful fireworks brightened the skies at the stroke of midnight. Guests were in for a surprise as 50 mystery gifts were allotted to anyone who found an envelope under their seats.
