MALACCA : Traders and restaurant operators in Merlimau have been advised not to raise prices of their goods and services during the by - election period.Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said enforcement officers would carry out regular checks to prevent price hikes.

Speaking to reporters after launching a price reduction campaign at Mydin hypermarket in MITC here yesterday. he said the officers would not take action against traders and restaurant operators but would advise them accordingly.

He also said the Government had subsidised up to RM 10.3 bil on items such as petrol, cooking oil, rice, flour and sugar last year. Meanwhile,state Chief Police Officer SAC Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said police were expecting an influx of about 20,000 people into Merlimau during the by - election period.

"We hope people would maintain public order when campaigning,"he told a press conference here. He said that police would set up 12 bases in Merlimau and increase patrols in the area. The Election Commission has fixedd Feb 26 for nominations and March 6 for the by - election following the death of assemblyman Datuk Mohammad Hidhir Abu Hasan,54, on Jan 20.
