The transformation of the groceries store project (TUKAR) has been created and developed under the (NKEA)-National Key Results Area through the wholesale and retail lab. It is one of the thirteen (EPPs) – Entry Point Project under the Ministry of Internal Trades, Cooperation and Consumers (KPDNKK). The objective of TUKAR project is to modernize 5000 selected groceries stores through out Malaysia. Mydin Mohamed Holding Berhad (MYDIN) had signed an agreement (MoU) with the government at the launching of TUKAR negotiation on January 2011.

About 100 selected groceries store has been put under MYDIN to undergo the transformation of the TUKAR project. Under the TUKAR project, each chosen store is given RM 20,000 to RM 60,000 for the modernisation of the entire stores. The transformation process also includes the painting of the premises, the re-arranging of the existing stocks, and the installation of new tiles, computerized pos systems and management systems. The transformation process will take about two weeks and about 10 numbers of workforces are needed in the completion of each of the stores transformed under the TUKAR project.

This will be done under the standardise procedures and guideline written by MYDIN. Under the TUKAR Programme, the small and local retailers will cater for a niche (smaller) market and ‘speed’ purchases. TUKAR programme are more targeted at the grocery store with size of 600 square feet to 3K square feet therefore, there will be no competition between the bigger player and the small local retailer. The TUKAR Programme will an able the local retailer to remerchandise the existing groceries or stocks in a more proper and modern manner using a standardised computerized pos systems and management systems.

No fees will be charged by MYDIN for the training provided under the TUKAR Programme. The local retailer will undergo the training and technology know how in the areas where their efficiencies and productivities are concerned. Assistance and guidance will be carry out by MYDIN once the transformation has been completed . MYDIN will be monitoring the stores from time to time and continuously providing the necessity tools to the retailer until the retailer are able to conduct and manage the entire business on their own. The local retailers who undergo the TUKAR programme can easily increase their sales between 10% to 30%. By using the pos systems, they can know and tell if they are under stock or overstock.

The other reason for the formation of TUKAR programme is to help the local retailer to enlarge their roles in managing their business and at the same time enrich them with all the quality attitudes and skills needed in order for them to be a great entrepreneur. This way, they do not feel left out or felt marginalised. Recently MYDIN has transformed two groceries stores in Merlimau, Melaka and one in Kerdau, Pahang. They are Pasar Mini Maznah Gemilang Enterprise, Pasar Mini Bandar Baru Merlimau and Pasar Mini Manja Makmur . More transformation will take place soon and MYDIN will achieve its target in getting all the 100 groceries stores transformed under the TUKAR project within this year.
